Vantage Oncology Hosts “Cincinnati Combats Cancer,” March 24, 2012

A Free Public Event Featuring a Grand Oncology Health Fair; Free Cancer Screenings; Physician and Patient Survivor Speakers; CME Courses, Inflatable MEGA BRAIN, COLON and LUNG Exhibits, as well as other exhibits and presenters

CINCINNATI, OH – Vantage Oncology, Cancer Family Care, the American Cancer Society, and countless other generous partners and sponsors are teaming up to educate Cincinnati residents about the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer at the “Cincinnati Combats Cancer” event. The unique and free event will be held on Saturday, March 24th at the Cintas Center at Xavier University. Highlighting the event will be Cincinnati City Councilman Wendell Young presenting a proclamation that declares March 24-31 as “Cancer Awareness Week in Cincinnati” as well as a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official opening of the event.

Open to the public, the event features a Grand Health Fair taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it will offer more than 70 booths that will provide local community members important educational information about early detection and why screenings are crucial in the fight against cancer. Those in attendance will have an opportunity to listen to physicians and cancer survivors such as comedian and juggler Scott Burton, receive free cancer screenings (by appointment only), tour the inflatable MEGA BRAIN, COLON and LUNG education exhibits, as well as see the Eli Lilly “Oncology on Canvas” art exhibit which features artwork from cancer survivors. In addition to live musical entertainment from The Rusty Griswolds, the BenGals and Cincinnati Roller Girls will be signing autographs and free giveaways and other prizes will also be available.

The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 1,638,910 new cancer cases will be diagnosed and 577,190 Americans are expected to die of cancer in 2012. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S., exceeded only by heart disease, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. While the numbers are alarming, Dr. Morand reminds patients that early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes for those diagnosed.

“We continue to make tremendous strides in the detection and treatment of cancer. However, these advancements are for naught if we can’t convince men and women to visit their doctor to receive life-saving screenings,” said Dr. Morand. “Our number one goal for this event is to educate our community members about cancer. By having physicians, cancer survivors and other educational exhibits available to those in attendance our hope is that they will be inspired to become more vigilant and proactive about their own health.”

The event’s health and media partners include: Vantage Oncology, LLC. and TriHealth; American Cancer Society; Cancer Family Care; Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Greater Cincinnati; Cancer Support Community; Warm 98.5 FM; Cincinnati Magazine; WKRC-TV Ch. 12; and Lamar Outdoor Advertising.
