Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia – Gwinnett County Launches Acupuncture Treatments for Cancer Patients

ATLANTA -- Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia, a Vantage Oncology affiliate, is adding a new service for its patients. Acupuncture will now be included as a treatment option in Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia's Integrative Oncology Program. The program is led by Tracy McElveen, M.D., Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director. Beginning December 1, acupuncturist Laura Bowman, M.D. will begin offering services weekly at Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia -Gwinnett County located at 311 Philip Blvd., Lawrenceville, Ga. Acupuncture services will be complimentary for a limited time as the program launches.

"We are excited to enhance our patient services by incorporating acupuncture into our Integrative Oncology Program, says Dr. Tracy McElveen of Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia - Gwinnett County. "Expanding our treatment options will allow us to better treat our patients, as a whole."

Acupuncture can be helpful in treating both the symptoms and stress that patients with cancer often experience. It involves the painless insertion of very fine needles into the body in order to generate a movement of energy. Overseen by Dr. McElveen, the Integrative Oncology Program at Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia focuses on supportive cancer programs that include nutrition, massage, mind/body medicine, and now, acupuncture. Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia continues to grow the wellness program to further serve and improve the quality of life for cancer patients.

"Acupuncture treatment focuses on a holistic, or whole person, concept of the body and wellness," says acupuncturist, Dr. Laura Bowman. "The needles act like micro batteries to move energy, or ‘qi,' through pathways that restore the body to proper balance and function."

Dr. Bowman is a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine, completed her residency in pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina, and her fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. In addition, she is a graduate of the Helm's School for Medical Acupuncture.
