TomoTherapy Radiation Treatment System Centerpiece of $3.8 Million Upgrade
Brockton Hospital today announced plans to become the first hospital in all of New England to offer cancer patients TomoTherapy, the very latest in Radiation Therapy. TomoTherapy is the most recent innovation in radiation therapy and will be offered to patients for the first time in this region when it becomes available at Brockton Hospital in March. The new technology will highlight a $3.8 million upgrade and renovation project in Brockton Hospital’s radiation therapy center, a significant investment, which demonstrates their commitment to treatment innovation and patient quality of life.
The entire $3.8 million project comes as part of a partnership with Vantage Oncology, Inc. a national organization with expertise in developing and designing state-of-the-art radiation oncology centers. In additional to the new technology, the project will include a renovation of Brockton Hospital’s radiation therapy center to provide a more comfortable patient environment.
About TomoTherapy
Tomotherapy is the most recent innovation in radiation therapy technology being used to fight cancer. Brockton Hospital will have the only TomoTherapy Hi-Art® system in New England used in the treatment of prostate, breast, lung, brain and soft tissue sarcomas. In addition to TomoTherapy, a new General Electric CT Simulator and the hospital’s recent upgrade of a Varian Linear Accelerator with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), will provide patients access to the most advanced radiation therapy technology available in the region.
“New technologies such as TomoTherapy deliver higher doses of radiation with fewer complications and side effects than patients typically experience when treated with conventional radiation therapy,” said Mark Vasa, M.D., Acting Chief of Radiation Oncology at Brockton Hospital. “With the multi-disciplinary approach to treating malignancies today, our new technology will undoubtedly result in optimal results for the patient ”
The new TomoTherapy Hi-Art® System combines 3-D imaging from an integrated CT scan (IGRT) with highly targeted radiation beams to precisely pinpoint all tumors and deliver intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) continuously from a 360-degree radius. By combining daily CT scans to confirm the size and location of the tumor before each treatment session with the delivery of radiation the radiation oncologists can precisely treat both large and small tumors located throughout the body. As a result, patients are exposed to less radiation, thereby helping to preserve healthy tissue and decreasing potential side effects.
