Baptist Cancer Center Purchased the Elekta Synergy Platform
Until now treatment delivery has had to rely on assumptions about target location, based on data that was old relative to the time of treatment. Having the ability to image the patient at the point and time of treatment, with an imaging system providing soft tissue information and showing organs at risk, will help physicians avoid organs at risk, sparing much more healthy tissue resulting in a more accurate delivery of an effective treatment. This is what the Elekta Synergy® offers, it will enable physicians to unleash the full potential of radiation therapy. 
Enhanced conformance is only beneficial when the dose is accurately directed towards a target. The target may have moved between planning on a CT scanner and treatment on a linear accelerator and can move both inter or intra-fractionally whilst the patient is undergoing treatment.
The creation of Elekta Synergy® was driven by the need to visualize internal structures, including soft tissues, in three dimensions within the reference frame of the treatment system and at the time of treatment. This will allow the clinician to minimize geometric uncertainties resulting from both organ motion/deformation and slight differences in patient set-up.
Elekta Synergy® has therefore been designed to inspire clinical confidence via IGRT to practice advanced radiation therapy techniques. This combination of high resolution imaging, taken in 3D and at the time (the 4th dimension) of treatment – combined with workflow solutions developed to be applicable on a routine basis – is described as ‘4D Adaptive’ and is the Elekta® IGRT solution. |
