Before you begin treatment, a clinical consultation and evaluation will be scheduled with a radiation oncologist. This specialist participates in your cancer care in coordination with other physicians and medical professionals. This consultation will take approximately one to one and one-half hours and you can trust that your questions will be answered to your satisfaction during your visit.
When you arrive at the cancer center, you will be greeted by one of our receptionists who will begin the consultation process by asking you to complete several forms. She or he will inform the nurse of your arrival, and will present the physician with any additional reports or x-rays you may have brought with you.
The nurse will guide you to one of the exam rooms and will ask you to change into a gown. A physical examination is necessary for your physician to make a recommendation.
When you have finished changing, the nurse will take a history from you. That is, she or he will ask you several questions before the physician does. She/he will also ask you if you are currently taking any medications. It is important that you bring either the medications or a list of the names and dosages of these medications so our information will be complete.
The physician will take additional information from you. He or she will review your records, X-rays, scans and other test results and perform a physical examination. You will then change back into your regular clothes. Once you are changed the physician will discuss your diagnosis and treatment with you and your family in detail. Sometimes additional tests are needed and these will be discussed with you. If the radiation oncologist believes that you will benefit from radiation therapy, a treatment plan will be presented to you.
The nurse will provide you with additional information and instructions, and will arrange your next appointment, if appropriate.
